Private School Vouchers

Public schools – which educate 90% of America’s students — are open to all students regardless of disability, religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other factor. They are a unifying force in our diverse society. That’s why public funds should support public schools.

But public funds are being diverted to private, religious schools. Those schools often promote religiously-based interpretations of science, civics and history and discriminate against students who are LGBTQ, have a disability, or are the “wrong” religion. Private religious schools also are permitted to discriminate on the basis of religion in their hiring decisions.

Private school vouchers violate the fundamental principle of religious freedom because they pay for religious education with taxpayer dollars.

Each of us should get to decide how – and whether – to support religion, it’s not the government’s place to use our tax dollars to fund a religion.

We must protect our fundamental American principle of religious freedom –  that everyone has the right to support their faith, or no faith at all, as long as they don’t harm others.

State lawmakers nationwide are working feverishly to accomplish what Trump and his Education Secretary Betsy DeVos could not: funneling your tax dollars away from public schools to fund private religious education.

Don't force taxpayers to fund private religious education – keep public funds in public schools, where they belong.
